Peek into our Raised Bed Veggie Garden in May of our first gardening year. We're planting seeds, tiny plants that we started indoors, and plants bought from the nursery. Favorite summer garden recipes included!

Planting Day in the Garden, May Year 1
May 25, 2019
On a sunny late May day (5-25-2019), we planted the majority of our garden. This is in no way a "how to garden" story. It's more of a journal of a beginner. We built a big garden last year and are learning as we go! This is what we planted:

Veggies from Store-Bought Starter Plants
We bought some starter plants from a local nursery including Tomatoes (3), Peppers (2), Eggplant, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Zucchini, Spring Onions (split from a neighbor), Chives, Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, and Sage.
We also got some flowers, Marigolds, Zinnia, and many native perennials for around walkways.

Veggies Transplanted from Seeds We Started Indoors
We started some seeds ourselves including Tomatoes (5), Peppers, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, and Winter Squash.

Seeds Directly Sowed in the Ground
Some seeds we planted directly in the soil including Green Beans, Cucumber, Winter Squash, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Swiss Chard, Kale (late April), Peas (late April), and Carrots (late April).
We planted our window boxes with Spinach, Lettuce, Basil, and Cilantro seeds.

Veggies Back From Last Year
Strawberries and a few Shallots came back from last year. Only 1 of 8 shallot plants that I planted in the fall came up. The guy at the farmer's market who I got them from said several of his didn't come up either, probably from the extremely cold winter.

See the next update, the Garden in June.
